What to Expect

The diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea can be complex.

1. The first step to a healthy, restful sleep is to make an appointment with Dr. Jacobson at Jacobson Family Dental to discuss your symptoms and risk factors.

2. After we confirm a suspicion of sleep apnea, we’ll begin to explore the severity of your condition. Sometimes making simple lifestyle adjustments like switching to a healthier diet, getting more exercise, quitting smoking, or even sleeping on your side will assist with minor sleep apnea symptoms.

3. In more advanced cases, treatment alternatives such as oral appliances may be discussed.

MADs for Grand Junction sleep apnea treatment

MADs, or mandibular advancement devices, are similar to mouthguards and help to open the airways during sleep by moving the tongue and lower jaw forward. In addition to significantly reducing snoring, these devices also prevent apneas from occurring by keeping the airway open. MADs are a popular treatment option for those suffering from sleep apnea.

FAQ about sleep apnea treatments

Will my insurance cover sleep apnea treatment?

Many health insurance plans provide coverage for sleep apnea treatment’s oral devices. At Jacobson Family Dental, we’re in-network with many major insurance companies, including Delta Dental and Medicare Advantage plans. We’re happy to submit claims for out-of-network plans, too.

Does it hurt to wear a MAD?

It is normal to feel mild jaw tension when first using a MAD, but the device should not cause pain. If you continue to experience discomfort, it may be because the device is not adjusted properly. If you experience jaw pain, it could be a sign of a TMJ issue, and you should inform your dentist. With time, most people become more comfortable using a MAD.

Are there side effects of using a MAD?

Using a MAD may result in some mild side effects, such as:

  • Occasional toothaches
  • A stiff jaw when first starting to use the device
  • Increased saliva production
  • Dry mouth upon waking

These effects are generally minor and present much less risk than untreated sleep apnea.
