What counts as a dental emergency
Call us if you have any of these:
- Severe or throbbing tooth pain
- A knocked-out tooth
- A cracked, broken or chipped tooth
- A lost crown or filling
- Swelling in your gums, cheek or jaw, or a pimple-like bump on your gums
- Bleeding that won’t stop after a mouth injury
Not sure if it counts? Call (970) 257-7474 and our team will tell you whether to come in now.
What to do before you arrive
These steps protect your tooth while you’re on your way to us. Call us first so we can get you on the schedule.
Knocked-out tooth
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part). Don’t touch the root.
- Rinse it gently with water if it’s dirty. Don’t scrub it.
- Place an adult tooth back in the socket if you can. Never put a baby tooth back. If you can’t reinsert the tooth, keep it in a small container of milk.
- Come in right away, ideally within 30 to 60 minutes. Minutes matter for saving a tooth.
Abscess or swelling
Home care doesn’t treat an infection, so call us the same day. Until you arrive, rinse with warm salt water. Hold a cold compress against your cheek, 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off. Don’t put heat on the swelling, and don’t put aspirin on your gums.
Broken tooth or lost crown
Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any pieces. If you lost a crown, bring it with you. Cover a sharp edge with a bit of sugar-free gum or dental wax until you see us.
Severe pain
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as the label directs, and ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take blood thinners, are pregnant or have kidney, stomach or liver conditions. Keep your head raised, and avoid very hot or very cold food and drinks. Call us the same day, because pain that eases doesn’t always mean the problem went away.
When to go to the ER instead
Go to the emergency room or call 911 if you have:
- Swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow
- A fever with facial swelling
- A broken jaw or serious injury to your face or head
- Bleeding you can’t control after 10 minutes of pressure with clean gauze
- Swelling that spreads toward your eye or neck
Once you’re stable, call us. We’ll take care of your teeth.
