Dental implants in Grand Junction, CO

Replace missing teeth with the dentist you already know

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth and holds a crown, bridge or denture in place. A local oral surgeon places the implant. Dr. David Jacobson makes the crown or denture that goes on top, so you stay with your own dentist for the part you see and chew with.

What is a dental implant?

An implant has three parts. The implant is a small post that sits in your jawbone like a tooth root. The abutment connects the post to the replacement tooth. The crown is the part you see, and it’s made to match your other teeth.

Implants stay in place without relying on the teeth beside them. They also help protect your jawbone. Read more in dental implants and bone loss.

Implant options we restore

  • Single implant crown: replaces one missing tooth.
  • Implant-supported denture: anchors a full denture on as few as 4 implants.

Not sure which fits? Dr. Jacobson reviews your mouth and x-rays and explains the options. See our tooth replacement page too.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

You may be a good candidate if you’re missing one or more teeth and your gums are healthy. You also need enough jawbone to hold the implant. If you’ve lost bone, ask us about your options.

Gum disease and some health conditions affect healing. Dr. Jacobson looks at your health history and x-rays at your consult. He tells you whether implants fit your situation. If they don’t, he’ll explain other ways to replace your teeth.

The dental implant process, step by step

  1. Consult with Dr. Jacobson. We take x-rays and a digital scan, review your health and plan your treatment.
  2. Referral to an oral surgeon. We work with local oral surgeons who place the implant in your jawbone.
  3. Healing. Your bone fuses to the implant over about 3 to 6 months.
  4. Impressions and design. Back with Dr. Jacobson, we scan your mouth with our Trios 3Shape scanner to design your restoration.
  5. Your new tooth. Dr. Jacobson places your custom crown, bridge or denture, and checks your bite.

Healing time varies from person to person. We’ll tell you what to expect for your mouth.

Technology we use for your implant restoration

Nobel Biocare

We restore implants from Nobel Biocare. It’s a long-established implant brand with parts that are well documented and easy to source. Your surgeon and Dr. Jacobson work from the same system, so the post and the crown are made to fit each other. If your crown ever needs service years from now, the matching parts are still available.

Trios 3Shape digital scanner

Our Trios scanner takes a digital impression of your mouth. You skip the trays of impression material, and we get a precise model for your crown or denture.

Dental implants vs. bridges vs. dentures

Dental implants

  • Replace the tooth root, so they help protect your jawbone.
  • Don’t rely on neighboring teeth.
  • Take longer, because your bone needs time to heal.

Dental bridges

  • Fill a gap by attaching to the teeth on either side.
  • Take less time than an implant.
  • Need us to prepare the neighboring teeth for crowns.

Dentures

Dr. Jacobson walks you through each choice at your consult.

What dental implants cost

Your cost depends on how many teeth you’re replacing, whether you need bone work, and the type of restoration. We give you a written estimate before you start. The surgeon’s fee and our restoration fee are separate, so we help you see the full picture.

  • With insurance: We’re in-network with many carriers, including Delta Dental and Medicare Advantage. We check your benefits for the restoration.
  • Without insurance: Our in-house dental plans give you 15% off additional treatment. Adult plans cost $550 a year.

What to expect at your consult

Dr. Jacobson looks at your teeth, gums and bite, and he takes x-rays. He asks about your health and what you want from your smile.

You leave with a clear plan for the next steps, and a written estimate for the restoration. You can ask any question you have.

What happens after your implant is placed

Your oral surgeon gives you aftercare directions for the days after surgery. Most patients plan a few quiet days, with soft foods and rest. Call your surgeon if you have a fever, bleeding that won’t stop, or pain or swelling that gets worse after the first few days. Go to the ER if swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow.

During the healing months, keep your regular visits with us. We check your gums, and we keep your other teeth healthy. When your bone has healed, we start your restoration.

If you wear a temporary tooth or denture while you heal, tell us if it feels loose or rubs your gums. We’ll adjust it.

How long do dental implants last?

With good care, dental implants can last many years. Daily brushing and flossing, healthy gums and regular checkups all help. Smoking and untreated gum disease raise the risk of problems.

The crown on top can wear down over time, just like a natural tooth. If it does, Dr. Jacobson can replace the crown without redoing the implant.

Questions to ask before you decide

  • Is my jawbone healthy enough for an implant?
  • Which restoration fits my mouth: a crown, a bridge or a denture?
  • How long will my treatment take from start to finish?
  • What will the surgeon’s fee and your restoration fee add up to?
  • What does my insurance cover?

Bring your list to your consult. We’ll answer each one.

Caring for your dental implant

Brush and floss around your implant like you do your natural teeth. See us for exams and cleanings, so we can check your gums and bite. Healthy gums keep your implant stable for the long run.

If something feels loose or sore, call us. A quick visit can catch small problems early.

Dental implant FAQs

Does Dr. Jacobson place the implant?

No. A local oral surgeon places the implant. Dr. Jacobson makes and places the crown, bridge or denture on top of it.

How long does the process take?

Plan on several months. After placement, your bone heals around the implant for about 3 to 6 months. Then Dr. Jacobson restores it.

Do dental implants hurt?

Your surgeon numbs the area before placement. Soreness afterward is common, and your surgeon will give you aftercare directions.

How much do dental implants cost?

Cost depends on the number of teeth, any bone work and the type of restoration. We give you a written estimate for the restoration before you start.

Does insurance cover dental implants?

Coverage varies by plan. We’re in-network with many carriers and we check your benefits first.

Can implants hold a denture in place?

Yes. An implant-supported denture can anchor on as few as 4 implants. Ask Dr. Jacobson if it fits your mouth.

What if I’ve lost bone in my jaw?

Bone loss may change your options. Read dental implants and bone loss, then book a consult so we can look at your x-rays.

How do I care for an implant?
